Mayur Vihar's forgotten amphitheatre

Mayur Vihar's forgotten amphitheatre

Lack of attention and poor upkeep has left an amphitheatre in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension in a state of neglect. Located between DLF and Star City malls, it was constructed with a view to provide an open theatre to artists in Mayur Vihar. But sadly, maintenance issues has turned the place into hotspot for boozeheads.

There are over two dozen liquor shops in the two malls where scores of people come every evening. It is also when snack sellers, pan masala and cigarette vendors can be seen going about their business here. Booze lovers don’t need to go far for disposable glasses, bottled water or soda as vendors sell these too.

DP Sinha, a renowned theatre artist and author, told City Spidey that many people are not even aware that an amphitheatre exists here. “For lovers of art and theatre, this facility is available in their proximity. But, even young artists are unaware of it.”

He added, “There are a number of artists and art lovers in Mayur Vihar’s housing societies. They go to other places in Delhi to showcase their talent. This place (amphitheatre) can be used by artists if the authorities pay a little attention in this direction.”

When City Spidey approached Delhi Development Authority (DDA) regarding the issue, the planning department officials said that the subject lies under the jurisdiction of East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

What came as a surprise was the lack of awareness about the existence of the theatre by EDMC. Satya Sharma, EDMC mayor, said, "I am not aware of this theatre. I will be able to comment on this issue only after I get some information from the officials (concerned)."

A sorry state of affairs, wouldn’t you say?
