MV-I Ext: What is that stench in Samachar Market?

Residents say it’s difficult to stand in the market even for a minute, and that they avoid going there in the evenings.

Samachar Market in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension is one of the busiest spots in the area. Located near Nirman Apartments, it is frequented by residents of more than 20 neighbouring housing societies.

However, of late, residents say that in the evenings, they avoid going near the front side of the market because of a foul smell. They say street vendors and visitors urinate in the open there. The reason — lack of a functional public toilet in the area.

"I mostly come in the mornings to buy fresh vegetables. Sometimes, it is difficult to stand there for even a minute because of the stench,” says Ridhi Parsekar, a resident of Vardhaman Apartments who frequents the market.

Residents have written to the authorities, but to no effect. GS Rawat, joint secretary of Nirman Apartments,  said, “Several complaints made by individuals and RWAs to the local MLA Manish Sisodia, a powerful minister in the Kejriwal government, and to the area councillor Sandhya Verma have not yielded any results. Nirman Apartments wrote a letter to Sisodia and urged him to construct a public toilet near the market. But it has been a year now and nothing has been done about it.”

When City Spidey visited Samachar Market, it found that there was a public toilet there, but it was of no use. It was constructed by EDMC several years ago but due to poor upkeep and lack of water, it lies dilapidated and neglected today.

Verma told City Spidey, “After receiving complaints from residents, I have put this issue up for discussion in an EDMC meeting. Apart from this market, some other places have also been identified for the construction of public toilets.”
