BMT is an important part of treatment in many blood cancers and non-cancer blood disorders like Thalassemia. Though the success rate for BMTs in India is on a par with international benchmarks, we really need to create an awareness that It may take as long as a year for the new bone marrow to function normally, but in most patients their quality of life improves after the treatment. And the patients can live a normal life thereafter.”

Dr. Priya Tiwari, Sr. Consultant - Medical Oncology (Unit II) said, “Cancer is curable in many patients now. With advancements in diagnostics and therapeutics, we have better surgical techniques. With chemotherapy drugs being readily available, we also have many new treatment options to offer to the patients in the form of targeted therapies and immunotherapies. Also, with passing time and as more and more research is coming up the emphasis is on personalized care that is individualizing cancer treatments as per patients’ need and expectation.”

One of the Cancer survivors, Pawan Kumar, present at the event said, “The most important thing you should know about cancer is that it can be defeated. This disease is a battle that you have to fight day-by-day. You should stop worrying about the future and surround yourself with good thoughts and people who give you emotional support. When you are battling this disease, it is important to make sure that each moment counts.”

Another survivor, Prem Prakash, who witnessed the event said, “It was scary in the beginning but with firm determination, positive outlook, and extensive care, I defeated it. I hope my battle with cancer will encourage others to stay strong, hopeful, positive, and happy.”
