Celebrate valentine with these timeless 'shers'
Ahead of the valentine season while the gift stores are selling cuddly teddy bears and mushy gifts, there are others whose interest lies in the more subtle expression of love through poetry. Every word written by poets and authors touches our heart and stays there for a long time.
From expressing the deeper meaning of love to life lessons, we can only thank poets for offering such precious gems. CitySpidey has attempted to bring a few of such immortal poetic gems for our readers. So here is an offering of some of the cherished Urdu poets and their poetry.
1. Firaq Gorakhpuri
Kho diya tumko to hum puchhte phirte hain yahi, jis ki taqdeer bigar jaaye vo karta kya hai
After losing your love the only respite I get is from asking," What does one do when one is unfortunate?"
Taa-umr bas ek yahi sabak yaad rakhiye
Ishq aur ibadat mein niyat saaf rakhiye
Till you are alive follow this lesson/ Approach prayer and love with an honest heart
Mehfil mein gale milkar woh dheere se keh gaye,
Ye duniya ki rasm hai, ise mohobbat mat samajh lena!
After a hug she whispered in my ear/ This is a formality not love my dear
4. Javed Akhtar
Chhor kar jisko gaye the aap koi aur tha,
Ab main koi aur hoon wapas to aa kar dekhiye
When you left me I was a different person. Come back to see how much I have changed.
5. Nida Fazli
Dil mein na ho jurrat to mohabbat nahi milti,
Khairat mein itni badi daulat nahi milti.
Sans daring there is no love,
In charity it is rare to get this precious gift.
6. Ahamad Faraz
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhane ke liye aa,
Aa phir se mujhe chod ke jaane ke liye aa.
Let it be anguish, even to torture my heart, come
Come even if only to abandon me and to torment again.
However, there are others who have a more detached approach to love. I came across Faiz who has professed a more saner approach to love. He feels that there are more beautiful things in the world to ponder upon than love alone.
Aur bhi dukh hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke siva,
Rahatein aur bhi hai vasl ki raahat ke siva
There are other sorrows in the world than the sorrow of love and more things to delight than meeting your beloved.
Whether, a more romantic or a more detached approach, love as an eternal emotion has always been the perennial theme of poetic expression.
