This I'puram resident quits his IT job to set up low-cost clinics for maids

Pankaj Kumar Gupta saw a guard dying because he couldn't afford the medical bills, and that's how this resident of Himalaya Legend came up with this noble idea.

In the world we live in, altruism is hard to come by — but it isn't difficult. When Pankaj Kumar Gupta quit his job as an IT professional, he felt the familiar pangs of uncertainty, but he took the plunge. He is now trying to set up a low-cost clinic for security guards and maids working in residential societies.

Gupta is also the general secretary of the RWA at Himalaya Legend, the Indirapuram society he lives in. The decision to open such a clinic came after a security guard in his society died of diarrhoea. The guard never consulted a doctor — it was not something he could afford. The incident left a deep impact on Gupta.

At his clinic, patients will have to register themselves for an annual fee of Rs 500, but medicines prescribed will be provided free of cost. They will have to pay for tests, but the clinic will give them discounts. Initially, the chamber will open for a single shift from 4 pm to 6 pm. Later, if demand spikes, a morning shift may also be added.

Gupta has roped in Amit Kumar, a doctor living in the same society, to help him out in this venture.

Gupta also runs a training centre called Keon near Kidzee at Gyan Khand 4, Indirapuram, for budding IT engineers. After classes disband around 4 pm, the centre will double as a clinic.

The clinic is yet to be christened, but registrations have started to pour in. More than 50-55 people have already registered themselves in the past 20 days. To ensure success, Gupta has also started approaching the RWAs and the AOAs of his neighbourhood, asking them to spread the word.

City Spidey wishes him luck. It's not every day that you see someone thinking about the guards and the maids of a society. Bravo!
