Dwarka: Yet another spell of acute water shortage

Delhi Jal Board officials seem helpless even as some places receive water for only 10-15 minutes a day.

Dwarka: Yet another spell of acute water shortage

Several societies and DDA pockets in Dwarka, such as sectors 2, 5, 11 and 12, are reeling from an acute shortage of water. Residents say the problem has persisted for a month.

"Delhi Jal Board's water supply is inconsistent," said Prabhakar Gautam, a resident of Dwarka Kunj Apartments, Sector 12, Pocket 5. "They supply water once in three days. We have written to the authorities but nothing has been done yet."

AK Mittal, secretary of Shivam Cooperative Group Housing Society, Sector 12, highlighted another problem. "The pressure of the supply water is low. This, coupled with the scarce supply and the fact that we are dependent on private water tankers for more than a month makes the situation more grave than the authorities would like to believe," said Mittal.

Societies such as Harmony Apartments in Sector 4, Surabhi Apartments in Sector 11 and the DDA SFS Flats in Sector 5 get water supply for only a 10-15-minute window a day. "We have been spending a fortune on private water tankers to meet our daily needs. The Delhi Jal Board [DJB] has assured us that it will bring us relief, but we are not confident it will make good on its promise," said Mahesh Gupta, general secretary of DDA SFS Flats RWA, Sector 5, Pocket 1.

Gupta has spoken to DJB officials to get to the root of the problem.

He explained, "The supply to societies such as Harmony and Surabhi apartments, and DDA SFS Flats is done through the underground reservoir [UGR] in Sector 4. When we discussed the water-shortage issue with DJB officials, they said the UGR received water from Command Tank 3, which was not happening smoothly of late, and neither in sufficient quantity."

"We are planning to stage a protest if the problem persists beyond this week," Gupta added.
