New Delhi: Do you know there are different varieties of Gol Gappe in India? Gol Gappe, India's all time favourite street food is called by different names in different parts of the country. Although in most cases the recipe is almost the same, there might be quite a lot of difference in their tastes.

Gol Gappe is a crispy puffed ball filled with smashed potato and flavoured tangy or sweet water. When you put it inside your mouth, the ball just burst to give you a lip-smacking taste. It is also called Gol Gappa (East India), Pani Puri (West & South India) or Puchka (North India). Be it called whatever, the taste of this water ball is so yummy that one can hardly resist. The specialty of Gol Gappe is its different flavored water which adds taste to it like - Imli water, Hing Imli water, Pudina water, Jeera water, Kacha Aam water, Meetha water and Ajwaini water etc..

1. Gol Gappe

The lip-smacking snack of suji and atta puris filled with Hing water is known as Gol Gappe in New Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Gol Gappe are made from a mixture of potato, chickpea, and chutney. They are served with tangy water. The puris have the extra crunch that will leave you wanting for more.

2. Puchka (Phuchka)

Gol Gappe is known as Puchka in the Eastern states of India like West Bengal. A Puchka is made with a mixture of boiled gram, mashed potatoes, and green chillies as filled with lemon squeezed on the top of it. The chutney is tangy and the Imli water is spicy. It is slightly bigger as compared to our normal puris. It is made of wheat flour.

3. Pani Puri

It is a fried hollow and round puri filled with sweet and spicy water along with tamarind chutney, potato, chickpeas and chaat masala. Pani Puri is a popular street snack that varies in taste across various regions including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Nepal. Gujarat has potato slices that are finely chopped along with the sweet chutney, while in Mumbai, you get to see ragda (the mashed white beans) stuffing with sweet tamarind chutney.

4. Pani ke Batashe

This name is popular in Central India, including parts of UP and Rajasthan. It is the regular Golgappa with essential potato filling and dry mangoes water.

5. Gup Chup

Gol gappe also has a funny name called Gup Chup because it is said to fill your mouth, flooding it with water and you are unable to speak for a while! They are named Gup Chup in Odisha, parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Hyderabad and Telangana. White peas or chickpea is added as a stuffing along with aloo bhujia, dahi, spicy-tangy water and boiled potatoes.
