New Delhi: What are your views on formal dress and cycling? Well, you might have heard this in regions like Europe where they commute to work on cycling. However, in our very own Delhi, Power Pedallers, a cycling group took the challenge on March 7, 2021, to ride in full formal office gear. The group shared their experience saying that it was tough initially but not that difficult. They managed an average speed of 20 kmph en route.

In India, we don’t often see people on the roads of cities, riding to their offices on a cycle as it appears to be an insane and unworkable proposition. However, the group of riders from Dwarka chose to test this hypothesis on Sunday by riding to work on cycle

Power Pedallers is a budding cycling group with 200+ participants who are based out of mostly Dwarka and Janakpuri. The group comprises riders from all age groups from 10 years to more than 50 years, who ride together on weekends to explore Delhi on wheels.

The group has been actively encouraging more people to take up cycling with support from West Delhi Cyclist and Dwarka Cycling groups. The group created Cycle To Work Ride intending to integrate cycling into daily life.

Some of the group members have already stopped using the regular vehicle for work up to a 5 km radius. The group wanted to take it a step further with the view “cycle to work is a real possibility worth exploring - saving petrol and endorsing a healthy life-style.”

Neeraj Prabhakar, HR Leader with an MNC organisation at Gurugram and a member of the Power Pedallers said, “Initially, we felt it was difficult to ride formally but as we kept pedalling, it kept becoming easier to ride. We completed our first formal dressed-up ride of 38 km with an easy speed of 20.5 kmph (Dwarka to Connaught place in approximately 55 minutes). Not bad and quite surprised actually.”

Cycling is fun and also a healthy practice. Cycling improves cardiovascular and aerobic fitness; lowers blood pressure; boosts energy; builds muscle; and improves coordination. Biking to work is fun, plain and simple. The practice allows you to integrate that simple feeling of exhilaration into your daily grind.
