RESIDENT SPEAK: 1,725-bed govt hospital still not operational in Dwarka

Dwarka: Seniors Hub Dwarka, a registered NGO set up for the senior citizens of Dwarka sub city, have undertaken the drive to highlight the delay in the opening of the "under-construction" 1,725-bed super specialty hospital in Sector 9, Dwarka.

The issue has been taken up with both the central and state governments through email, Twitter, WhatsApp groups and online petition. This drive is receiving huge response from Dwarkites, who are the worst sufferers especially in this pandemic period.

Encouraged by this drive, many Dwarkites have also sent mails to Delhi CM urging him to open it immediately. Same is the case with Twitter, where it is being  tweeted and re-tweeted by many. At the time of writing this note, 1,551 persons have signed the online petition and are still counting.

As far as Dwarka is concerned, there is not a single government hospital that can accommodate the general public except one under-construction 1,725 bed hospital in Sector 9, Dwarka, This hospital was promised to be made functional in 2020 but it is not made so far. There may be some last minute glitches.

The nearest super specialty hospital is in Janakpuri which is around 8 km or in Hari Nagar, which is 15 km away. This 1,725-bed hospital is supposed to cover not only Dwarkites but the entire population of South West and North West Delhi, as we understand.

It was in 1997 when land was earmarked for this hospital and the project was approved in 2007 by the Delhi government with a budget of Rs 350 crore. The construction finally started in 2014 and the capacity of beds was increased to 1,725.  As per media reports, early-2020 was the target to make this hospital operational.

During Covid-19, the residents of Dwarka have been left in the hands of the private hospitals, or they are forced to go to far-off areas due to this delayed project. Along with our President, RK Jain, I am, as General Secretary of Seniors Hub Dwarka, are steering this drive.
