The truth behind Caesar salad

New Delhi: Just Like pie and hot dogs, Caesar salad has secured itself as an American food staple. In fact, it’s one among the most commonly-featured restaurant menu items within the country, having found places in both the best of restaurants and most questionable of dumps. There's more to the romaine lettuce-based salad that meets the attention though. Your favourite lunchtime indulgence features a rich history which will surprise even the foremost knowledgeable of food  experts.

What is Caesar salad?

A traditional Caesar contains romaine lettuce, croutons, garlic, juice, eggs, parmesan, Worcester sauce or anchovies, and salt and pepper. Ingredient amounts vary from chef to chef, but the simplest and most authentic Caesar you’re going to get is tossed tableside to make sure freshness.

The Caesar salad has nothing to do with Julias Caesar. Though we’re sure the famous Roman wouldn’t have minded a plate of the dressing-doused greens, the Caesar salad is linked to chef and  restaurateur Caesar Cardini. Cardini made this recipe at his Tijuana restaurant in Mexico, Caesar’s Bar and Grill, in 1924. Caesar salad has his own day and is celebrated on July 4th.

Today, you'll find many sorts of Caesar-style dressing in your local supermarket, but the simplest thanks to experience (yes, experience), a Caesar salad is to order one from a high-end restaurant where you recognise it'll be prepared tableside. All Caesar dressings have more or less an equivalent ingredients — romaine, croutons, garlic, juice, Worcester sauce or anchovies, eggs, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and salt and pepper — but each restaurant, and every waiter, makes theirs slightly  differently.

Watching this easy dressing made ahead of you, with all  the ingredients being mashed, whisked, and tossed inside an enormous wooden bowl, is an incredibly cool and old-school gastronomic  experience.
