Today, the world is celebrating World Environment Day. It is a day when people are made aware about the importance and protection of environment.
According to the United Nations, "The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises, and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment."
This year, the theme of World Environment Day 2021 is 'Ecosystem Restoration' and Pakistan will be a global host for the day. On the occasion, a global mission – UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) – will be launched.
Earlier this year, the UN had recognised that the economic development had come at a cost of environment. Now, as there was a dire need to revive the damage caused. Hence the theme of Ecosystem Restoration was chosen.
Ecosystem restoration basically means preventing, halting, and reversing the damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it. It also means assistance in revival of ecosystem. Under this, the focus is on recovery of ecosystem which was destroyed and degraded.
The restoration can be done by increasing plantation activities and taking care of the pressures so that the nature revive on its own.
