Here's why Noida's a lot cleaner these days

College students from different Noida Sectors have united to keep the city clean. Members of this group, named ‘Nav Urja Youth Manch’ (NUYM), sweep roads and clean filthy areas within Sectors and market places. The group also organises awareness campaigns encouraging residents to dump garbage at designated places only.

NUYM was formed in November 2014. The group was the brainchild of six college students who decided to step up and initiate a cleanliness drive. It was soon joined by other students almost overnight.

"We had never thought the group would grow so rapidly. People our age are seldom associated with social work and we wanted to change this stereotype. I am happy that NUYM has grown to 250 members and growing," says Pushkar Sharma, a proud NUYM volunteer.

The group tries to convince the RWAs of different sectors to maintain a clean society. They also conduct thorough cleanliness drives every weekend.

Vinay Chaudhary, another volunteer, says, "Youngsters like me while away the time on weekends. Now we have a job to do. We have stopped littering. Now that we believe in the cause, we also counsel residents of various sectors."

Dr. Mahesh Sharma (Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India) and NGOs like the Lions Clubs have extended support to the group to keep up the good work.
