Go to her for a diet chart — you may end up with a decor plan

While most of us struggle to keep up with just one profession, this maverick designer-nutritionist juggles two disparate jobs with elan.

Khushbu Singh draws her inspiration from French designer Philippe Starck. Her personal style seamlessly blends contemporary chic with Indian sensibilities. But wait … she is also a successful nutritionist! Maverick, individualist, trendsetter — call her what you will, but respect is what she inspires in most people.

Singh came to Noida, Sector 30, two years back to start a new life with her husband, a doctor. And before she knew it, she was juggling two very different careers. While she is a well-known face at Dr Ambedkar District Hospital in the morning hours, in the evenings she attends to her plush office in Sector 46.

And Noida, indeed, was a great place for her to set up business. She explains, “Most couples work, so they are often snacking on the wrong kind of food. So I have a lot of clients who need to be guided in their food habits. Plus, a lot of people move here in search of better careers, so there are a lot of homes to be done up as well. This is the place for me.”

The first few projects came from family and friends, who wanted her to redo or revamp their homes. Singh recalls, “I took up projects for my relatives and friends. They wanted to do something with their homes, but they were not clear exactly what. I helped them redo their homes. Starting my own firm, Eminent, was a sort of a natural progression.” To kickstart the firm, she enlisted the help of a friend, Supreet Batra, who also became her business partner.

"My firm is like a friend for the middle class. It offers ideas, designs and products at an affordable price. We believe in keeping the appeal wide and want to do away with the myth that interior designing is just for the upper class. Here we have something for everyone,” she says.

Singh loves how this job lets her work at her own pace, meet new people and innovate. However, there is one thing she hates: "I perpetually have cement dust in my hair and my face!"

Though Singh began as a nutritionist, she was always aesthetically inclined. Explaining how she was always fascinated with wall colour, upholstery and drapes, she says, “Right from my childhood, I used to draw well. I would etch out these beautiful spaces in my head. But since my stream was science, I didn’t know how to combine these two sides of me. But, fortunately, it has all fallen into place now — I can finally execute the visualisations.”

But things would not have been possible had her husband, Dr Brajesh Singh, not been beside her. She says, “Having a friend for a designing partner and such a supportive husband has made all the difference. They gave me the confidence to take the risk and helped me strike a balance between the two very diverse professions.”
