PCOS and its impact on mental health

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a problem that affects women's hormones level. Today we have five out of ten women who are diagnosed with PCOS. It's a hormonal disorder common among the reproductive age. I was 17 years old when I got to know that I was diagnosed with PCOS. I lived my entire school life living through the pain. It impacted both my mental and physical health.

What is precisely PCOS?

PCOS influences a lady's ovaries, the reproductive organs that produce estrogen and progesterone — chemicals that control the feminine cycle. The ovaries additionally produce a modest quantity of male chemicals called androgens. Primarily women aren't even aware of them having PCOS.

PCOS is a "condition"  that influences the ovaries and ovulation. It's three main problems which I also encountered are:

  • Cysts in the ovaries
  • Irregular or skipped periods
  • High levels of male hormones

PCOS is a complex condition. Women diagnosed with PCOS are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders. It is not mandatory for a person who is diagnosed with PCOD to have these mental health issues. Issues may vary from person to person.

A slight lifestyle change can help!

Individuals who have PCOS and feel discouraged, restless, or notice changes in their health can ask their doctors about possible therapy choices. Numerous medicines might assist with depression and anxiety.

These lifestyle changes helped me during my PCOS journey. I hope these points come in handy for you all.

  •  Reduce intake of sugar
  • Maintain your weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Increase intake of iron-rich food
  • Herbs for PCOS
  • Whole grain food
  • Fish oil
  • Yoga for mental health
  • Fibre-rich food

All these points are proven to be helpful for PCOS. A slight change in your lifestyle can revolve around all your problems related to PCOS. Try to substitute your regular food with enriched and nutritional food for a better and healthy lifestyle.
