He almost gave up singing at the age of 18 when his father died and he had to take on the responsibility of his family. But that’s past. He is now pursuing an active musical career, with almost seven to eight shows a month. Meet Someshwar Sharma, a resident of Aravali Apartments, in Sector 34, Noida.
Sharma is a versatile singer and his rendition of the old classics by legendary playback singers such as Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, even Udit Narayan, has won him appreciation from all quarters. He has been routinely doing musical nights at five-star hotels, cafés and various auditoriums across Delhi and the NCR.
Hooked to songs on TV and radio from an early age, Sharma began singing at the age of 5. He had no mentor or teacher, so he taught himself. However, his singing took a backseat when his father passed away. But things turned around after he got married. With firm support from his wife and children, he started singing again. And he has been going from strength to strength since. He admits that without his wife, Shailaja, he would not be where he is today.
Sharma works as an HR administrator in government sector, but that doesn’t deter him from moonlighting as a singer — if anything, it makes him more determined and focussed.
He has given quite a few successful performances in Greater Noida — at a college to mark the 39th death anniversary of Mukesh, at a a Kishore Kumar night in the city, where he entralled audiences with the famous number Aati Rehegi Bahaaren, and at the Dhoon Foundation. His latest performance was at the India Islamic Cultural Centre on Lodhi Road, New Delhi, on September 4.
Like every performer, Sharma, too, hopes that he will be able to lend his voice to a Bollywood star some day.
