What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver also known as hepatic steatosis is a condition when too many fat cells accumulate in the liver. This condition can occur when your body is producing too much fat or not being able to metabolise them properly. This condition can further lead to liver-related issues.

Types of Fatty Liver

When an alcoholic person gets fatty liver it is known as alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and one who doesn't drink and develops fatty liver is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

What are the causes of fatty liver?

Some of the most common causes of fatty liver are:

Obesity: When an individual reaches up to the actual weight of their body according to height and other aspects the condition is called obesity. This can also occur due to other reasons like inactivity, consuming rich carbohydrate food etc.

Insulin resistance: Improper response to the insulin of the body, causes the increased level of glucose and such a condition is known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can be caused due to different reasons like diabetes, PCOD/PCOS, obesity etc.

High blood sugar: It is the high level of insulin in the blood, which differs from type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

High level of fat: Those who consume high fat concentrated food or have inherited high levels of fat can result in it.

Some of the less common causes of fatty liver can be:

- Pregnancy
- Certain genes raise the cause of fatty liver
- Exposure to some toxins
- Rapid weight loss
- Some types of infections

What are the symptoms of a fatty liver?

There are no particular signs of fatty liver, through which one can detect fatty liver, but many people experience fatigue and abrupt pain in their lower abdomen.

Generally, doctors follow the below-mentioned steps to identify if someone has fatty liver or not.

Doctors will ask you about your medical history
They can also examine patients physically to know if they have swelled liver
A blood test can also reveal about individual’s condition
Imaging studies like CT scans, ultrasound exams and MRI scans
Liver biopsy

What are the treatments for fatty liver?

According to the Health website, Healthline, there are no such medications that have been approved to treat fatty liver but here are some of the treatments which are prescribed by doctors:

- Limit or avoid the usage of alcohol
