Una Enclave: Where there’s a bin, there’s a way

And this Mayur Vihar Phase I society has found out how.

Una Enclave: Where there’s a bin, there’s a way

Sometimes, to make a point, all you need is a dustbin — or, in the case of Una Enclave, 30 of them. This society in Mayur Vihar Phase I is using dustbins with the slogan "Harit Una - Swachh Una" to impress the idea of cleanliness upon residents.

Thirty of these bins have been placed at different points inside the society — in gardens, galleries and parking areas. The idea is to make it almost impossible for residents to litter anywhere inside the society.

The results are for all to see — Una Enclave is one of the cleanest in the neighbourhood.

The brainchild of Pawan Kumar Vasudeva, president of the society's managing committee, the initiative was meant to encourage greater resident participation in keeping the complex clean. Speaking about the success of the idea, Vasudeva says, “Children would eat chips and chocolates, and throw the wrappers anywhere they wanted. It was a sorry picture. Hence, we decided to have dustbins at all possible points, and the idea worked. The same children are way more sensible now.”

Una Enclave is one of the largest housing societies in the area, with nearly 400 flats. It was developed some 25 years back and has been named after the Una district of Himachal Pradesh, from where Vasudeva and a few others hail.
