Noida: Cyclist hit by overspeeding bike

Noida: A 40-year-old Jatin Sukhija was riding his cycle and suddenly an overspeeding bike coming from the wrong side hit him. The incident happened in the early hours around 5:50 am on Monday near Prateek Wisteria, Sector 76 in Noida.

The incident has again brought the issue of inadequate infrastructure for cyclists in Noida. Cyclists getting hit by vehicles on road is not a new phenomenon. CitySpidey has been reporting such incidents in the past.

After Monday's incident, CitySpidey reached out to Sukhija to know about his concerns.

“It was my morning ride as usual. Suddenly, an overspeeding bike coming from the wrong side hit me. My cycle wheel ring was damaged and my specs got broken. I got injuries in my left hand and legs,” said Sukhija.

Sukhija further said that cyclists are vulnerable to such incidents. He said, “This has become a very common incident with cyclists in Noida, especially getting hit by vehicles coming from the wrong side. The U-turns in Noida are very far, which makes residents hesitant to take such long ways and end up going on the wrong side. It is very dangerous for cyclists,” Sukhija added.

Rajiva Singh, President of NOFAA, who is also a passionate cyclist from Noida, said, “This issue is taking a serious toll. We should try and address this by taking a sector-wise approach, focusing on making one sector at a time completely free of wrong side driving.”

Regarding solutions, Singh suggested, “We must focus on awareness programs, penalties for defaulters, signboards, regular patrolling, PCR vans on vulnerable points, infrastructure so that people do not break rules. People participation is important and we can also reward them accordingly. RWAs and AOAs can make a difference.”
