World Habitat Day: Aiming for a carbon-free world

“Habitat”, the term itself covers a broad spectrum comprising of culture, livelihood, communities, history etc. Each year World habitat day is observed to provide a safer, healthier and freer space of living. This year the UN observes World Habitat Day under the theme “aiming for a carbon-free world”. The theme underlines the growing menace of polluting substances, urbanization at a rapid rate leading to unhealthy living among individuals.

As climate change is a global issue, this year’s theme aims to work to create a balance between human existence and the environment which will help in creating a safe living for each individual.

Climate Change triggered by unchecked industrialization

The ongoing scenario with respect to urban spaces is a cause of concern as the ongoing migration of rural to urban has led to a lack of space, resources and created congestion within the society. The spaces where on one side are limited, the increasing industrialization makes it even more badly as the emissions from it have created an unhealthy atmosphere.

Sustainable Development Goals: a need of the hour

Further, The Habitat day includes the attainment of sustainable development goals such as affordable and clean energy, making cities inclusive, safer and sustainable, ensuring actions to combat climate crisis etc. The day in itself creates awareness about the need to establish spaces with sustainable living and a healthy ecosystem.

Though the need for sustainable spaces is ever increasing as individuals we need to adopt certain steps to help the environment flourish and grow. One can replace the use of plastic and other artificial forms of energy with environment-friendly techniques and resources which limit the emission of harmful gases, thus one needs to understand that the sustainability of the spaces depends on the use of resources by each individual which needs to be environment friendly. This World Habitat Day, let’s pledge to create ways to restore the nature and its spaces.
