A girl whose father was a filmmaker and mother a costume designer, Aparna Sen was born with the exceptional qualities of both her parents. Born in Chittagong district of Bangladesh, she spent most of her childhood in Kolkata and Hazaribagh. Sen is an alumni of Modern High School for Girls and a drop-out of Presidency college, Kolkata.

Sen began her acting career at the age of 15 with one of the best Auteur of cinema history 'Satyajit Ray'. She played the role of Mrinmoyee in the samapti portion of Ray's 1961 film 'Teen Kanya'. At the same time, Sen was also photographed by the renowned photographer of 50's and 60's 'Brian Brake' for the well-known photo from his 1960 "Monsoon" series of photographs'.

Sen began her directing career in 1981 with 36 Chowringhee Lane for which she won a National award for Best Director. She went on to achieve further success in direction with films Paroma, Sati, Yugant, Paromitar Ek Din, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, 15 Park Avenue, The Japanese Wife, Iti Mrinalini and Goynar Baksho. She won her second National Film Award as a director for Mr. and Mrs. Iyer.

Sen was also known for being the jury on world platforms like Moscow International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards etc. Recently while promoting her Hindi drama film 'The Rapist' she shared a few stories of Donald Ritchie and Kim Jiseok who were her co-jurors at that time.
