MV I Ext: Speed breakers, please! The busy intersection of Mayur Vihar Phase 1 metro station and Samachar Market

The absence of speed breakers at the intersection of Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Extension Metro station and Samachar Market has become a major cause for concern for residents of Rosewood Apartments, which lies right at the junction. This poses a great risk for pedestrians.

The situation gets worse in the evenings when people visit the market area. Vehicles zipping across the intersection are a threat to residents, particularly children and senior citizens. This road is used by residents of more than 10 group housing societies in the area.

Sudha Shrivastava, president of Rosewood Apartments, said, “The PWD had installed two speed breakers on either side of the road, but they are no good now. It has almost been a year and both the plastic speed breakers are useless now. This intersection has become a nightmare for all of us.”

She added, “Fortunately, no fatal accidents have taken place so far, but there have been several minor incidents. Speed breakers must be installed immediately. Otherwise, a big accident is just waiting to happen.”

KK Verma, president of OCS Apartments in the same area, said, “Speed breakers should be constructed at intersections, especially where residential societies are so close to it. A warning sign must also be put up to alert drivers. But even that is missing!”

The Indian Road Congress guideline on speed breakers reads: "Speed breakers must be placed at every intersection, especially where a small street joins a major arterial road." It further adds that the roads passing through residential colonies must have a warning sign 50 m before the speed breaker.
