Dissatisfied with Noida Authority's efforts to control the outbreak of chikungunya in the city, a group of residents from Prateek Wisteria, in Sector 77, Noida, launched a massive cleaning and anti-larvae drive in the society on Monday.

They sprayed pesticides in areas that were likely to be mosquito breeding grounds. Residents Ajay Mehara, Yudhvir Singh, Atul Gulati, Mukesh Kumar and Uday Pratap were part of this initiative.

Yudhvir Singh said, “The number of dengue and chikungunya cases is witnessing a steep rise in the city. A few cases of chikungunya have been reported from within the society and residents feel unsafe.”

“The onus to rid the city of the diseases is on Noida Authority, but as it has failed to act, residents have been compelled to step forward. The builder has also not taken any action. No one seems to be bothered about this. It's alarming, to say the least,” added Singh.

However, Noida Authority officials claimed that they were conducting fogging drives in the city and that open areas were being sprayed with pesticides. Subrata Kanth, sanitation inspector of Noida Authority, said, “I have received about 30 complaints from residents, and fogging has already been done in those areas.”

Meanwhile, the initiative by the group has garnered appreciation from other residents. Nisha Rai, a resident, said that the team was doing a good job and that she was thankful to them. “These measures will prove to be more effective than those being taken by the government,” she added.
