Maulana Abul Kalam: Early architect of India's Education system

"Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurship and moral leadership among students and become their role models." These are the words of Independent India’s first education minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, whose birthday is celebrated as National Education Day. He pioneered the basis of scientific education in India and was a firm believer in providing quality education to all irrespective of gender, class creed etc.

National Education Day was first celebrated on November 11, 2008. Each educational institution celebrated the day by organising seminars, workshops, sessions and events around various topics which inculcate value and knowledge among educators and students. Presently, when the dynamics of education is changing, more importance is being given to skill development and entrepreneurial understanding.

Abul Kalam Azad always saw Education as a way of liberation and gave importance to each sphere whether it was theoretical understanding or practical implementation. He has set up major councils and boards which were made to ensure a wholesome range of education to each child such as :
1. University Grants commission
2. All India Council for Technical education
3. Kharagpur Institute of higher education
4. The University Education commission
5. The Secondary Education commission

The first education minister of Independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam also contributed to the establishment of educational institutes like Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Kharagpur. He strongly advocated education for women and free and compulsory primary education for children up to the age of 14.

The existing progress in the field of education in India owes its basic structure and principles are based on the understanding of Maulana Azad's philosophies.
