Noida remains the most polluted city for a second consecutive day

Noida: The Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the severe category for a second consecutive day, with Noida overtaking Ghaziabad and becoming the most polluted city in India. The AQI has now remained in the ‘severe’ category for ten straight days.

Meanwhile, Noida becomes the most polluted city in the country for the second consecutive day. According to the AQI bulletin released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), with an AQI of 488, Noida was the most polluted city in the country on Friday, a spot occupied by Ghaziabad on at least seven days this season. On Friday, the AQI in Ghaziabad was 486, making it the second most polluted city.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Noida and Greater Noida have spiked to an alarming level. As per CPCB, the AQI of Noida in Sunday evening is 317 in Sector 125, 351 in Sector 62, and 320 in Knowledge Park 3, Greater Noida.

CEO Noida has announced some good news for the residents of Noida. She shared a tweet, "An Air Pollution Control Tower is being built in the green belt near the DND expressway in the area adjoining the film city in Sector 16A. This tower, construction of which is in the final phase, will help treat air pollution in the region."

Vandana Mahajan, a resident of Mumbai shared a tweet, "I am in Noida for a few days and this is the view outside our home!! I am asthmatic! For people with debilitating respiratory conditions, this is a gas chamber! Even people with healthy lungs will choke! Everyone must stay indoors !"

In a talk with CitySpidey, Vikrant Tongad, an Environmentalist said, “From the last 10 years, Noida city is facing a lot of air pollution issues. There are multiple reasons for spreading pollution in Noida. However, there is no detailed study on Noida air pollution. The study on Noida is based in Delhi. There is no in-depth research on the Noida air pollution story.”

He added, “Now the AQI index of Noida is in the Hazardous or Severe category. Vehicle pollution and roadside dust are the major reasons for air pollution. There is no proper cleaning or greenery along with the road. Dust plays a major role in the Noida air pollution. Noida is an Industrial city also, there are so many illegal factories. There is no proper mechanism for waste management. Waste burning also plays a major role.”

“Noida is along with Delhi, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad which are the most polluted cities due to which it also affects Noida. The pollution in Noida is throughout the year. In October, November, due to the weather changes, pollutants come near to the surface.” Tongad concluded.
