Gaur City 2: Resident has a narrow escape as lift free falls

Greater Noida: Lifts malfunctioning is not uncommon in highrise residential societies of Noida and Greater Noida. Another such incident came to light in Gaur City 2. Vivek Saxena, (25), a resident of Gaur City 2 had a narrow escape when the lift he was travelling in crashed to the ground. He escaped unhurt but the incident has left the residents shaken.

Vivek, had returned from a wedding ceremony at 11:00 on the night of December 7, 2021. He took the lift from the basement to reach the fourth floor. The moment the lift had reached the first floor, it had a free fall. Vivek remained stuck between the ground floor and basement for around 15 minutes.

As Saxena was stuck in the lift, he tried the emergency and intercom buttons to get help but they didn't work. But he managed to reach his family. The family members on their part tried to contact the maintenance staff. However, according to Vikek’s family members, there was no one from the maintenance team present at the scene.

Saurabh Vikas, another resident of the society present at the scene called up the maintenance head. The maintenance head assured that the emergency staff will be there as soon as possible. Later, residents with help of security guard and emergency electrician present at the scene rescued Vivek.

Dismayed at the lack of a prompt response and absence of the maintenance team, the family of the victim along with other residents of the society, filed a written complaint in Bisrakh Thana, Greater Noida. Residents, concerned about their safety, shared that there have been frequent problems with the working of the lift because of a lack of proper maintenance service. They further alleged that the developer is not looking into the issue.

Alankit Saxena [29], a resident of Gaur City 2 and the brother of the victim says, “We, along with a couple of residents have filed a written complaint in Bisrakh Thana, Greater Noida. The police officers had come to the spot. It’s been one year since we shifted to this society and the lift issue has always been there. We don't receive any positive response whenever we complain about the same. What happened with my brother could have been more serious. We are paying our hard-earned money not to suffer like this”.

Saurabh Vikas, another resident of the society says, “By God’s grace, nothing untoward happened. As he was stuck in the lift, we tried contacting the maintenance staff but there was no response. Even the police arrived at the scene within 10 minutes but not the maintenance team. The lift has a tendency to malfunction very often. This is only because of poor maintenance. It may cause a fatal accident any day if the authority concerned does not pay any heed to our complaints.”

In response to this incident, the company responsible for the lift released a statement citing that the repair work of the lift will take some time. Till then, the lift should be barricaded so that no further untoward incident takes place.
