Noval Djokovic: The reign of the 'Joker' continues

AS sports Awards Gala that took place in Hotel Palace, Madrid recently, honouring the best sportspersons who outshone all others in the year 2021, confirmed what we, the followers of tennis, knew all along. Novak Djokovic (34) is the best in the sport of tennis right now.

The Joker, as Djokovic is known by his fans and media, is considered by many, as not only the best in the game right now but also one of the greatest that has ever walked onto the tennis court. His list of 20 Grand slam titles, which matches Nadal and Federer, is second to none. The debate about the GOAT (Greatest of all time) still rages on but the debate about the strongest tennis player of all time has ended with Djokovic.

Federer may have the best all-court game and Nadal may have the most powerful game, but Djokovic is the strongest, and not just physically, and here is what makes him great, he is strongest in the head. This is the view a well-respected tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou expressed while talking about Djokovic recently on Essentially Sports.

You cannot beat Djokovic. You cannot simply defeat him. You can only edge past him once in a while. In the year 2021, he showed us this once again by garnering three Grandslam wins. 2021 is the seventh year when he became a year-end world number one in the ATP ranking. In an era where Federer and Nadal played, this is no mean achievement.

With Federer and Nadal plagued by injuries, Djokovic is all set to continue his reign. The young breed of tennis players (Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Berrettini) are there but are yet to reach the heights where Djoker stands. There continue to be some serious doubts about his participating in the coming up Australian Open 2022, because of the Covid 19 vaccination controversy. Nevertheless, we hope things get sorted out soon, as the tennis fans are all eager to see the ‘Joker’ doing his thing on the biggest tennis stage once again.
