Love thy neighbour, or maybe not

Two neighbours living in Jal Vayu Vihar of Sector 21, Noida, lock horns over uprooted plants in a park, with blames flying thick and fast.

Love thy neighbour, or maybe not

People fight over money, over space, over water -- all sorts of things, really. And now, you have got two neighbours crossing swords over plants! Seventy-nine-year-old Rajesh Maggu claims that her neighbour, Saifali Mittal, deliberately uprooted all the plants that she planted over the last five years in a triangular park in front of her house in Jal Vayu Vihar of Sector 21, Noida.

While Maggu lives in Flat No. A-93, Mittal resides in A-88. Both the apartments are adjacent to each other and the park lies in front of the houses.

According to Maggu, she had joined hands with her neighbour five years back to start a green drive in the barren park. But after nine months, Mittal couldn't continue due to time constraints, but Maggu persevered.

But, on September 18 evening, Maggu found all her plants uprooted and the garden she had nurtured for five long years completely destroyed. She alleged that this act was carried out by her neighbour in collusion with the society RWA. She also sent a complaint to the horticulture department of Noida Authority.

But both Mittal and the RWA denied the allegation.

When City Spidey contacted Mittal, she said, "I didn't even touch her plants and she seems to be using the park as her personal property. The park belongs to the Authority, and she can't be using it for personal reasons."

Mittal further alleged that she was making manure with cow dung in the park, and that she was selling it too. She admitted that with help from the RWA, she removed the manure from the park, as it had turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. "But we don't have a problem with the greenery at all," she added.

DP Goel, RWA president, told City Spidey that residents had been complaining of foul smell emanating from the waste so they had to remove it. The RWA also offered another park to her where she could prepare the manure if she wanted to. However, she didn't agree to it, as the place was too far from her house.

Ombeer Singh, director of horticulture department, Noida Authority, said, "A letter has been sent to the forest department and an investigation is under way."
