2021 was an eventful year for fashion. We are talking about a range of comfortable stay-at-home wear to the finest evening couture. And like every year, we saw the return of some trends borrowed from last season (and decades—’90s and noughties fashion was huge this year). Yet, not all of them landed that well.
From the Kim Kardashian Met gala to Priyanka wearing a polka-dot green and black 'ball' dress, we saw many eye-rolling looks that became meme templates and went viral on the internet by their sheer absurdity.

Priyanka Chopra Ball dress trend
Priyanka Chopra Jonas has a habit of making statements with dresses only memes can describe best. Fortunately for all of us, she has a sense of humour about her choice of clothing too. Although it is unclear where Priyanka wore this dress, the photograph was originally shared by the Instagram handle Priyanka Closet in February.

The Polka Dot Draped Orb from a brand called Halpern flooded the internet with memes. Pokemon? Check. That guy in Takeshi's Castle? Sutli bomb? Yes. The list went on.
Cardi B green sunflower trend
Far be it for us to tell Cardi B what to do, but having a baby doesn’t mean you have to dress like a baby, too. This green onesie is a lot to take in, but it’s the bonnet that truly sealed Cardi’s fashion failure fate. It’s also producing some major Willy Wonka vibes, and while the Oompa Loompa’s may have her back with this look, we can’t say the same for us.
Kim Kardashian Met Gala black ensemble
It’s Kim Kardashian, of course. The reality TV star appeared wrapped up from head to toe in an outfit designed by her ex-husband Kanye West, who collaborated with Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia on this custom look. That fashion look was the talk of the town and of course the meme material too!
Emma Corrin in pale dress trend
In Emmys 2021, Emma Corrin donned a strapless pale yellow column dress that would have been unremarkable though shapeless on its own, but it came paired with bizarre yellow gloves. The gloves came up to her forearm but were fingerless at the tips, revealing an extremely sharp, claw-like black manicure. Most eyebrow-raising of all, though, was the yellow bonnet she wore, which looked like a cross between a swimming cap and the bonnets worn by handmaids in the Handmaid's Tale. It fastened under her chin. Within moments of photos of Emma hitting the internet, the star was already inspiring jokes and memes on Twitter.
Kim Petras Pony dress trend
In Met Gala 2021, Kim Petras, who showed up to the Met wearing a big ol’ horse head. Giddy up, and furthermore, yeehaw! Well, turned heads for the wrong reasons, looking possibly better dressed for Halloween. Did you show up to the wrong party, Kim?
