Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis is a condition when fat cells accumulate in the liver. This condition can occur when your body is producing too much fat or not being able to metabolise them properly.

There are two types of fatty liver. When an alcoholic person gets fatty liver it is known as alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and one who doesn't drink and develops fatty liver is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

If the condition is not brought under control timely, it can cause a threat to one's life. Accumulation of fat in the liver can slow its process and lead to liver failure. Controlling this situation often involves seeking medical help. But along with that, a balanced lifestyle and healthy food consumption are equally important.

Here is a list of a few food items one should avoid with fatty liver. These foods are mostly the ones that spike up the blood sugar level or lead to weight gain-

Salty food: Research shows that consumption of salt worsens the NAFLD. Salty food often consists of higher fat and calories which ultimately increase the risk of fatty liver.

Alcohol: Those with NAFLD can have alcohol once in a while but one who has AFLD are strictly restricted to drink alcohol as the disease has itself appeared because of overconsumption of alcohol.

Sweets and baked food: Sugary items like cakes, pastries, and chocolates are high in calories which can hinder the reversing symptoms of fatty liver.

Butter and ghee: people with fatty liver diseases are recommended to avoid food made in ghee and butter. Due to the higher concentration of saturated fat present in it which can trigger triglycerides in the liver.

Vitamin E Rich food: Add vegetables like red bell pepper, spinach, peanuts and nuts to your fatty liver diet. Many research shows it can show improvement in people with NAFLD and AFLD.

Flaxseed and chia seed: Chia and flax seeds are high in omega3 acids which are recommended for both types of fatty liver as they reduce the fat content in the liver. You can add these seeds to your vegetables as well as on top of your natural fruit drinks.

Olive oil: Some oils like olive oil and avocado oil help reduce the level of liver enzymes and are high in good fats.

Soy: Products prepared from soy like tofu and soy milk can be helpful in NAFLD as it strengthens the metabolism.

Water: Ample water is recommended in fatty liver. This helps to keep all the toxic flowing out of the body regularly and keeps the liver happy.
