DD RWA writes a letter to ECI to postpone assembly elections

Residents of Noida are under fear amidst rising cases of Covid-19 in the city. On January 1, the DD RWA (District Development Resident Welfare Association) wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI). In the letter, they appealed to postpone the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections of 2022 by two months to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Residents share that because of the upcoming elections, most of the people are participating in rallies due to which there is a chance of an increase in Covid-19 cases. In the letter, they shared that number of people getting infected with the corona is increasing every day despite imposing a night curfew because lakhs of people are participating in the election rallies. They mentioned that such rallies can be ‘super spreader’ events.

Thus, according to the letter, given the situation, if the elections are postponed by about 2 months, the potential spread of COVID could be minimized.

NP Singh, President DD RWA says, "We would like to bring to notice that every day the situation is becoming more critical with the rapid increase in cases of Covid-19. Many measures are being taken by the government itself to prevent the transmission of disease. However, despite this, the number of cases are on the rise. An election in such a situation makes no sense."

Sanjeev Kumar, Vice President DD RWA says, "The government must look at the serious implications that holding of an election under these times may have. Given this, we have to immediately stop the election rallies and extend the date of the election whenever possible. Nothing should be more important than the lives of the citizens."
