Durga Puja in Dwarka: What to expect this year

Dwarka is set to be immersed in Durga Puja celebrations, as various societies and organisations prepare to celebrate the festival with panache. Organisations such as Bangia Samaj, Aaikotan, Deepanvita and Aagomoni, and societies such as Dakshinayan society, Sector 4, and Air Force Naval society, Sector 7, are going for large-scale celebrations.

The festivities will begin from Panchami on October 6 with Anandomela. Artistes such as Usha Uthup, KK and Babul Supriyo will perform at different venues in Dwarka.

Here’s a quick lowdown on what to expect in these sectors of Dwarka:

Sector 6: Bangia Samaj

The Bangia Samaj celebrates the puja at the DDA grounds. Eminent artistes from Kolkata and Bollywood perform here every year. This year it is KK's turn on October 7 and Usha Uthup's on October 10. Apart from them, actors Swastika, Rituparna and Deb Banya from Kolkata, and Adriz, an artiste from Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, a musical reality show on TV, will also be performing.

BK Barua, media in-charge and general secretary of Dwarka Bangia Samaj, said, “Ours is the biggest pandal (tent) in the sub-city this year. It can accommodate 10,000 people.”

Sector 4: Dakshinayan society and Aaikotan

Dakshinayan society, one of the oldest in Dwarka, celebrates the festival in traditional Bengali style. TK Banik, organising convenor of the puja at Dakshinayan, said, “Every year we have a theme-based pandal, but this year we do not have a theme. Local artistes from Delhi and Dwarka will be performing.”

Aaikotan is organising the celebrations in Sector 4 on the vacant plot of land near Modern Convent School. This is its 15th year of  celebrations. Aaikotan is known for its statues. The celebrations here are more on the lines of Bangla tradition and artists. Sanjeev Majumdar, secretary of Aaikotan, said, “The statue is different this year, as we have used ancient and modern colours to decorate the idols. The idols are in a standing posture this year.”

Apart from local artistes, playback singers such as Arko Mukherjee, Prantik Sur and Tarun Sarkar will also perform at the cultural programme. Folk bands such as Fakira and Dohar from Kolkata will also claim their spot on the stage.

Sector 22: Deepanvita

Deepanvita celebrates the festival on the vacant plot of land near the community centre, and is known for its musical and cultural events that attract huge crowds. This year the puja committee has given local artistes maximum stage space. However, Babul Supriyo will make an appearance. The celebration will also see singers from Kolkata, such as Samartya Majumdar and Raghab Chaterjee.
