Swacchhta, a far cry in Dwarka?

Overflowing dustbins and uncleared dhalaos are common in some sectors as rains make matters worse and residents fear breeding of mosquitoes.

Swacchhta, a far cry in Dwarka? Garbage at an open dhalao in Sector 8, Dwarka

Despite the second anniversary of the launch of Swacchh Bharat Mission on October 2, the state of sanitation in Dwarka is far from satisfactory.

Many areas are filthy as garbage is lying on the roads for almost a week now. Dustbins in residential areas as well as markets are overflowing. In some residential pockets and societies, the cleanliness campaign has not made any difference as garbage is never cleared on a daily basis.

Sanitation issues are more pronounced in sectors 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 12. PS Dhunta, joint secretary of RWA, Sector 8, said, “In our sector, some of the roads were cleaned by the residents. But the dhalaos (garbage collection centres) and garbage dumping spots are full. The corporation has completely failed in maintaining sanitation in the area. Even during Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, the dhalaos were not cleared. This is really disappointing.”

Speaking about the corporation’s role in his sector, KS Bhati, president of Federation of RWA of Sector 9 (FORWAS) and of Ganpati Apartments, said, “The attitude of South Delhi Municipal Corporation is not up to mark as far as garbage management and Swacchh Bharat Mission is concerned. You can see garbage overflowing in the bins in front of our society. Just beside Bhrigu Apartments (Sector 9), the vacant plot of land has turned into a garbage dumping zone. The situation has worsened after the rains. Stench, mosquitoes and flies are always a problem. Even on Oct 2, the SDMC did not clean this area.”

Moreover, Tuesday’s rains have made matters worse. Garbage heaps and the areas near them have become filthy. One such area is in front of Om Apartments, Sector 14, where dumped garbage has been lying for almost a week.

Madhuri Varshney, president of Dwarka Forum, said, “The condition is deteriorating day by day. Now after the rain, the likelihood of mosquitoes breeding will also increase. SDMC should be concerned about this.”

“After the order of the LG, the SDMC staff cleaned some of the closed dhalaos and locked them. They have, however, forgotten about the garbage lying on roads and open dumping spots. Consequently, it is the people who are suffering,” she alleged.
