Water crisis in Kanchenjunga

Almost 400 residents of Kanchenjunga Apartments in Noida Sector 53 have fallen ill over the past four days after drinking sewage-contaminated water.

Sewage water seeps in to mix with fresh water due to a damage in the supply pipeline. This contaminated water is drawn up to the society flats.

Residents who consumed this contaminated water complained of acute stomach aches, diarrhoea and a general feeling of nausea. Many are left with no choice but to shun the society’s water supply and depend on packaged mineral water, says AK Srivastava, President of the RWA.

Kiran Pandita, a resident, said, “All my family members started falling ill one by one. I was clueless and scared when I rushed to the RWA office to enquire about what was happening. The contaminated water is a huge health risk for everyone in the society and should be looked into immediately.”

Rakesh Rathi, Vice-President of the society, said he noticed how murky the water was on February 15. He, too, had to endure intense stomach ache.

A Noida Authority official visited the society and pinned the problem on the neglected supply lines. RK Goyal, project engineer of the concerned area, urged the society to replace these immediately.
