'Zero Waste Ward' initiative by URJA and stakeholders takes off

URJA (United Residents Joint Action) and 'Central Zone of SDMC' joined hands to manage the waste being generated by the urban local bodies and began with ‘Maharani Bagh RWA’ of 'Sriniwaspuri municipal ward'. It was done to achieve colony-level waste management and make it a 'zero waste colony', which would then be replicated in other wards and zones.

URJA, believes that without citizen participation, the goals of waste management can’t be achieved. Hence, it is working towards achieving the goal to minimize garbage disposal at landfills around the Capital.

To chart out a plan of action to work on the ground, 'URJA' along with its other NGO partners 'Jhatka.Org' for digital engagement, 'ITC' for awareness among residents, 'Sajag' dealing with garbage collectors', 'Maharani Bagh RWA' and SDMC had numerous rounds of meetings and visits around Delhi to understand the requirements for achieving a zero-waste colony.

Madhavi Sachar, URJA coordinator, Central Zone took lead in coordinating with the RWA along with Wing Commander Jasbir Chadda who dealt with the fellow NGOs to develop a working plan on the ground.

SDMC initiated the work by developing the compost pits within the colony and the fellow NGOs began the awareness campaign in early February 2022.
