How to get rid of your old electronics

Sometimes, bidding goodbye to your old electronics gets a little hard. In India, it's customary to hand over old items to a local scrap dealer, who pays some money for them. However, we are unconcerned about what happens to these items once they leave our hands. These devices take up valuable landfill space and harm the environment if not properly recycled.

Here's how you can be creative in reusing or recycling your old equipment to reduce the risk of electronic pollution-

Send Them To be Recycled

Scrap owners aside, there are third-party recycling service providers available to recycle your electronics. It's as simple as contacting them for a pickup or dropping off your old gadgets at one of their collection facilities.

Moreover, stores like Croma and Reliance Digital now offer drop-boxes at the checkout counters to encourage responsible recycling. Croma claims that for every product placed in the recycling box, they plant a tree.

Sell your Old Electronics

Why not try to make some money off your old things before throwing them away? Cashify and ReGlobe are two platforms that acquire electronic things and pay you for them. They'll dispatch representatives to assess the condition of an item before quoting a fee.

You can also take matters into your own hands by selling unwanted electronics on sites like OLX or Quickr. You can also trade-in your old devices for new ones on e-commerce sites like Amazon and Flipkart. Exchanging things lowers the cost of new items, ensuring that old items are disposed of safely.

Donate them to a good cause

You can donate your old computer to an educational institute if it is still functional. DonateYourPC.in and other similar services will ensure that your old computers are put to good use by nonprofits or underserved schools. You can also contact Nonprofit organisations such as Pratham or ChildLine India. All you have to do now is make sure your PC is functional and satisfies the minimum requirements.

Turn them into something else

Some of your equipment may be too old to be used daily, but they may still have useful life before being discarded. Older technology can be used in a variety of ways. You can, for example, use your old phone as a webcam for Zoom meetings or even as a home security camera. An outdated tablet can be utilised as a digital photo frame or e-reader. Because of its size, the monitor of your old PC setup can be modified as an expanded display for your laptop.

Check with your manufacturer

Check with the manufacturer of your equipment to see if there are any return/recycling possibilities. Samsung Electronics, Dell, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and more companies provide a free service that collects your equipment from your home and transports it to an authorised recycler. Some even give discount coupons for every recycled good to entice users.
