Dwarka: People driving on the wrong side of the roads has become a common sight in the sub-city. Commuters can be seen driving on the wrong side of the road even during peak traffic hours. Not only the cars and bikes but also the heavy vehicles, school vans and DTC buses are violating the traffic rules. Although the Police claim that they are taking action and issuing challans against such violations, there seems to be no change in this ongoing practice.

Residents share that morning hours at signals in the area result in extreme traffic congestion because of the wrong side driving. Ex-Joint Secretary of Harsukh Apartments Sector 7, Ravi Jaitley says, “In the morning, school vans violate the traffic rules to save their time. They drive carelessly and create a dangerous situation for other commuters. Many vehicles violate the traffic rules by taking the wrong side. Wrong side driving is rampant is at the signals near Dwarka Court and near Palam Flyover."

Wrong side driving and jumping the red lights are very common in certain areas in Dwarka. This practice can be witnessed at the signal of Sector 3, MRV Bus Stand and DCP Office; at KM Chowk, Vivekanand Chowk, Peepal Chowk and the chowk of Sector 6/10/5/11.

Sanjay Singh, a resident of sector 17 says, “There is no sense of fear of traffic authorities in violators. Heavy vehicles of the local area are let off easily and so are the car drivers even if they violate the signals or drive on the wrong side. Traffic Police should ensure a safe space for commuters who follow the rules.”

As gathered, jumping of signals and wrong side driving is especially rampant in Chowks and T-points with signals in internal lanes and bylanes of different sectors. This happens because these areas are seldom surveyed by a traffic police officer and there are no CCTV cameras to record such violations. Such practice makes those points and roads accidents prone too.

President of RWA, Dwarkadheesh Apartments, Sector 12, Anjana Sinha says, “Traffic police ignore such vehicles unless they are carrying a special drive on road safety. Police must take strict actions against those driving on the wrong side. Earlier, there used to be police officers on bikes to regulate such violations but they cannot be seen now. They should think over such issues seriously.”

On the subject, Traffic Police officials said to take it into concern and do the needful.
