Parents of school-going children heaved a sigh of relief after the Delhi government on Sunday declared a three-day holiday in all schools across the city.

"The decision should have been taken couple of days ago. But we are glad that children can now stay home for at least three days," said Satish Sharma, a resident of Ashiana Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension.

Lalita Dobhal, a resident of United India Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, said, “We know air pollution is harmful for children but we can’t stop them from attending classes. Ultimately, the government has to think about it.”

The decision to close schools is applicable to all MCD-run schools as well. It was taken at an emergency Cabinet meeting on Sunday afternoon at Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. On November 4, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had asked the state government to take measures to control air pollution in the city.

It was also decided at the meeting that no construction work would be allowed for the next five days. Manish Sisodia, deputy chief minister of Delhi, said, "Diesel generators will not be allowed to run for the next five days. We appeal to all those who use diesel generators to wait for a few days. We have identified dusty roads in the city and have decided to sprinkle water on them."
