Dwarka: Alarmed and disturbed by a series of thefts in their housing society, the women of Akshardham Apartments Sector 19, have taken a voluntary charge of the security of their colony. A group of community women is keeping a foot vigil on the society premises. To facilitate this daily vigil they have even made a temporary cabin too where they sit periodically and keep vigil.
As gathered, ladies in groups keep a close tab on the society by walking in the common areas during daytime and from evening till midnight on weekends. Gomti Mattoo, Ramneek Kaur, Tanvi Dutta, Shashi Singh, Sarika Tripathi, Munni, Nalini, and Kamini are some women from the group.
As informed by the women, they have also pooled money from their savings so that they could keep a dedicated security guard. Gomti Mattoo, Vice president of All Dwarka Resident Federation and a resident of Akshardham Apartments is one of the pioneers of the idea. She says, “Security is at stake in our society. Several incidents of theft of cycles, tyres, batteries and also money from our temple have been reported here. We have brought the subject to the notice of RWA and police both but nothing effective happened. Finally, we decided to do something on our own and this initiative started.”
Mattoo informed that anti-social elements get access into society by cutting the barbed wire on the boundary wall. “It is easier to cut the wire and enter inside the premises. This is one of the biggest residential pockets in the city. There are about 1200 flats and about 8000 people live here. So there is a dire need for a robust security system. We have taken a small step. We want more women to join so we can make this initiative bigger and more effective,” says Gomti.
