On November 8, there was a slight relief from smog for residents of NCR but that was not enough. Despite issuing challans for burning of paddy in many parts of Haryana, residents still complained of watering in eyes, sore throat, skin allergy and headaches.

An official of Haryana Pollution Control Board (HPCB), said, “We have penalised 1,406 farmers in many districts of Haryana for burning paddy stubble. Most of the famers who were challaned are from Kurukshetra to Karnal. An amount of Rs 13.75 lakh has been collected in challans.”

He added, “The department is spreading awareness by organising camps, but some farmers are not ready to stop the illegal practice of burning stubble.”

Breathing was difficult, especially for the elderly and the children. The number of people visiting hospitals with respiratory and chest problems has gone up.

Manish Kumar, a Gurgaon resident, said, “Due to the pollution, I was having difficulty breathing last night. My children also complained of breathing problems the whole night. I did not send them to school today. The administration must do something immediately to improve air quality.”
