Delhi High Court asks EDMC to clean all garbage storages by Nov 11

The Delhi High Court on November 9 asked East Delhi Municipal Corporation to clean all garbage storages by November 11. The National Green Tribunal (NGT), too, had asked the corporation to carry out the same work a few days back but nothing had been done.

On November 9, EDMC approached Delhi High Court and informed that they were unable to act on NGT's orders due to a shortage of funds and sanitation workers.

What's the story behind the shortage of workers?

The fact is that more than 5,000 EDMC sanitation workers had been protesting for their arrears since October 23. The corporation had not lifted a finger to resolve the issue till now.

After the High Court deadline, EDMC mayor Satya Sharma held a meeting with area councillors and civic officials today, November 10.

Sharma told City Spidey that they had asked sanitation workers to resume work by evening. "At the meeting, we assured sanitation workers that their dues would be cleared as soon as we received funds from the Delhi government. The workers assured us they would resume duty."

Delhi HC has also asked the Delhi government to release funds to EDMC at the earliest.
