Hard Cash Day 9: Landlords refuse to accept cheques and old notes

What with house owners only accepting new notes, people living on rent or shifting to rented accommodations are in quite a fix.

Hard Cash Day 9: Landlords refuse to accept cheques and old notes
Yet another group affected by the demonetisation is of people living in rented accommodations. Most landlords are neither willing to accept the demonetised notes nor cheques. They are demanding that payment be made in new notes only.

It was only on the 12th of this month that Harshit Dixit shifted to a rented accommodation in Supertech Capetown in Sector 74, Noida. The previous landlord had returned him his security deposit of Rs 5,000 in denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, claiming it was justified as he was paid in the old currency only. "The new landlord obviously refused to accept the old notes and I had to transfer him the amount online," said Dixit. "I had to queue up to deposit the old notes."

Vijay Kumar, who lives in a rented house in Noida's Sector 20, told City Spidey that since his landlord refused to accept the old notes, he would no have to get them exchanged to pay this month's rent.

Jyoti Singh, who lives on rent in Sector 40, seems to be one of the lucky few to have an understanding landlord. "My landlord told me that he could for the rent till next month," said Singh. "That would give me ample time to arrange for the new notes."
