Thanks to two factors: Most liquor stores are not accepting old notes, and people are thinking twice about shelling out cash.

Hard Cash Day 10: Liquor sales dip in Gurugram; wives happy

Liquor sales in Gurugram have fallen by half in the past nine days. Buyers and liquor vendors blame the cash crunch brought on by the demonetisation for this dip in sales.

“We have lost most of our daily customers," said a salesman with a liquor vending store in DLF Phase 3. "After the government’s move, our customers have gone down partly because of us not accepting the old notes and partly because customers are thinking twice before shelling out cash.”

The problem has affected a chunk of the demographic which relies on buying liquor with cash.

Said Prashant Dabral, a Gurugram resident for whom till recently get-togethers and parties on weekends were a regular affair, “Our weekend parties have gone down. I generally do not stash too much liquor at home, but given the present financial situation, I bought an entire carton of whiskey the other day. I have a party this weekend, so it will be easy for me,” he said.

Meanwhile, the move has been welcomed by some — especially wives of those with a love for the bottle. Sunita Singh, a resident, said, “The cash crunch has come as a blessing in disguise, as my husband's drinking has gone down. The demonetisation has done some good at least!"
