Hard Cash Day 13: Senior citizens continue to struggle

Despite allocating a separate day for them to exchange old notes, many continue to face a severe shortage of cash.

Hard Cash Day 13: Senior citizens continue to struggle

Senior citizens have been going through a tough time since demonetisation.

"We had sent our washing machine for repair," said SK Saxena, a 61-year-old who resides in Sector 36, Noida, with his wife. "We still haven't got it back, as the repairman is neither ready to accept old notes, nor receive payment through debit card."

Hari Om Tiwari, 69, lives in Sector 39, Noida. He said, "The biggest problem I am facing is exchanging the old notes for new ones. I have Rs 20,000 in old notes, but I just can't muster up the courage to go to banks, stand in long queues and deposit the amount. Even on November 19, when the government decided that only senior citizens would be allowed to exchange cash, the banks ran out of new notes after very soon. That leaves me with little hope for other days, when everyone will be rushing to get cash."

"I have a wedding to attend on the 22nd of the month, but I think I'm going to have to cancel tickets, as I am out of cash," he added.

However, despite these inconveniences, there were a few senior citizens who lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Most senior citizens, however, are incensed with the poor planning. Most of them said a week's notice would have solved a lot of problems.
