Experience the magic and influence of Hokusai Manga

The Japanese Manga, in contemporary times, finds fandom and appreciation across the globe. This art form of pictorial storytelling has evolved over the years in Japan and one artist who has made an immense contribution in this field is Katsushika Hokusai. An entire school of art in himself, Hokusai has a special collection of about 4,000 images in some 800 pages, published in 15 volumes to his credit, popularly known as 'Hokusai Manga'.

In an effort to bring this amalgamation of imagery by one of the most versatile and innovative illustrators of his time to fore, an exhibition named 'Manga Hokusai Manga' is being organised in the Japanese Foundation, Lajpat Nagar. The exhibition allows you to take a closer look at the work of Hokusai and his influences on modern-day manga artists, with imageries from all fifteen volumes on display. One can see how Hokusai's subjects change as he draws almost everything he can think of.

Hokusai Manga was what brought international fame to Hokusai and his work. Although he was well known before as well, this collection of art is considered to be a huge contribution to the Ukiyo-e art movement and the world of art as a whole. Even when Hokusai Manga reached Europe, the people there were taken aback by the sheer detail of work, beauty, and diversity of Hokusai's subjects. It gave a deep view into the daily life of Japan and of course, the rich Japanese culture. From a man squeezing his face, a man trying absurd poses, imageries of men and women doing mundane everyday tasks to a group of redfish boating on sea, the subjects featured in Hokusai Manga are diverse and seem to have a life of their own.

While the word 'manga' itself holds huge history and has had several interpretations, it is popularly referred to as Japanese comics. Today, this artform is taking over the world. It is natural that parallels between contemporary manga and manga by Hokusai will be discovered. Whether Hokusai's work has influenced the current manga scene or not remains a topic of discussion. In response to this discussion, the exhibition also features exclusive original works by seven current manga artists such as Shiriagari Kotobuki, Yokoyama Yuichi, Nishijima Daisuke, Igarashi Daisuke, Okadaya Tetuzoh, Ichikawa Haruka and KYO Machiko.

The exhibition also features work by different manga artists from different periods. Works by artists such as Uagawa Kuniyoshi, Oei (Hokusai's daughter), Sugiura Hinako, Sakura Sawa, Okadaya Tetuzoh, Saeki Konosuke, Kamimura Kazuo among others are also on display. The work of some of these artists was juxtaposed with Hakusai's work adding an interesting dimension to the exhibhition for the onlookers. While some of these artists have been influenced by Hokusai's art, some made Hokusai the subject of their art.
