Roshanara Club organises Grand Tennis Premier League starting (August 17-21)

To mark the occasion of 100 years of the iconic existence of Roshanara Club, the club is organising a grand Roshanara Tennis Premier League (RTPL) Tournament. The tournament will be from the 17th to 21st of August, 2022. The club plans to have 10 teams in the tournament. This tennis tournament is an annual feature in the club but this time around it will be special. For a change in the tournament, International and national players will be playing in the tournament along with the club members.

The members of the team will be selected by the process of auction. The ten team owners are Capri, Ubon, Gola Sizzlers, Smiling Tree, Ajooni Veda, Abbies Aces, Club 11, Unstoppable, Aamani Homes and RF. The Auction process will be held on August 7, 2022, after which the teams would be formed. The trophy for the tournament was revealed in a press conference organised on July 30, 2022, at the club.

There will be a total of 10 marquee players from outside the club members which will be distributed one in each team. Some of the players are Aditya Khanna ( India number 1, in 35-45 year category) Ashish Khanna ( ITF masters 130 Rank), Vivek Shokeen (Jr. Davis Cup), Sourav Singh (Jr. Davis Cup), Yannick Nelord, Nishant Goyal, Raja and Aditya Khanna. The chairman of Roshanara Club, Kanwar Ajay Singh has taken this initiative. Says he, "It is going to be a big leap in the level of tennis this side of the city has seen in recent years. For the first, we are getting players from DLTA to participate in a club tournament." On asking about the USP of the event, Kanwar Ajay replied with excitement that the finale of the event will be a twist. He says, "The most exciting feature of the tournament is the 4 a side and 3 side fixtures, in which one player cannot touch the ball twice simultaneously. This tournament will a challenge for the players."

Ashish Khanna says, "I am really looking forward to participating in the tournament. I like the format too. It is a great way to inspire the young generation and encourage the sport" On being asked about the state of tennis in the country he seemed very positive. Says Ashish Khanna, "The impressive level of tennis is being played at the junior level in the country and we have no dearth of talent. With a better level of coaching and international exposure, we can sure produce Grandslam champs."

In conversation with Gauri Shankar, Tennis Coach, at the Roshanara club, we got to know that it is a great opportunity for all the players in the team because it is organised in a way in which each and everyone will get the chance to play in the tournament. Gauri says, "Not only the marquee players but all the players will get an equal chance to perform in the tournament. This is going to be a very well organised tournament and we have excellent tennis facilities here to support it."
