Hard Cash Day 17: Managing committees still don't have cash

Ever since demonetisation, society managing committees have been facing a serious cash crunch. With residents paying their maintenance charges through cheque and online transfer, the situation doesn't seem to be getting better.

Though many of the management committee members support the Centre's decision, they say it has affected their functioning.

“On average, we need about Rs 5,000 a month to take care of the society's maintenance," said Purusottam Das Bhatt, president of the United India Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension. "This month, however, we have additional work to do, such as replacing water pipes and carrying out a few development works in the society. We need at least Rs 5,000 just for that. Liquid cash is important as we cannot pay everyone through our debit cards or online transfer. We are left with only Rs 200 in cash now. Our office boy stood in queues for three days and yet was unable to withdraw cash,” he added.

KK Verma, president of the OCS Apartments in the same neighbourhood, told City Spidey, “We spent all the cash we had before November 8 paying salaries of security guards and other staff. The Centre's move has left us penniless.”
