Refrigerator gives 70-year-old Mahagun Manor resident sleepless nights

Sunita Kapoor, a 70-year-old resident of Mahagun Manor in Sector 50, Noida, has been running from pillar to post to get her Hitachi refrigerator fixed, despite having paid for an extension of its warranty period.

She had bought the refrigerator in 2015 from an authorised dealer in Sector 18, Noida. To her dismay, however, it broke down several times during the one-year warranty period itself, and she had to get it repeatedly repaired by company-appointed service providers. She even paid Rs 2,707 for extending the warranty period for another year and wrote to the company for help.

In her complaint to the managing director of Hitachi India Pvt Ltd, she rued the poor quality of the product she had received and the inconveniences she had to repeatedly go through despite being a senior citizen. However, she hasn't heard back from the brand.

City Spidey took up the issue with Hitachi's department of corporate communications. But Malvika Mudgal, the spokesperson, said that hers was not the right department to approach for the problem. She conveyed that Hitachi had sold its stake in the consumer-goods business to Johnson Controls and hence was no longer dealing with service requests. “However, the problem has been forwarded to Johnson Controls and we’ve requested them to look into the matter urgently,” she added.
