The funeral of a 70-year-old woman who died of cancer on November 28 was held up for a day due to shortage of money. Her son returned empty-handed twice from Bank of India in Sector 9, Noida, where he has an account.

Yamuna Prasad, son of the deceased, was told by the bank staff that they didn’t have cash. Prasad told City Spidey, “My mother, Phoolmati Prasad, was suffering from cancer for the past six months. I have Rs 16,000 in my account but haven't been able to withdraw a penny."

Meanwhile, help has come from several quarters. The chowki in-charge of the area gave Rs 2,500 to the family, while a local politician donated Rs 10,000 for the funeral.

“Noida Police helped the deceased's family withdraw Rs 15,000 from the bank today [November 29], and the funeral was performed," said Dinesh Yadav, SP City (Noida). "But we are investigating the bank's actions. If it is found that the staff behaved irresponsibly, appropriate action will be taken.”
