Dwarka: Community people come together to develop an urban forest

Dwarka: In an effort to make Dwarka greener, the residents of Dwarka have initiated the development of an urban forest in an MCD park near Air Force Naval Officers (AFNO) Apartments, Sector 7. For the forestation, the plantation was done in two phases- on Saturday, September 10, 2022 and on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. The forestation was done with Miyawaki technique which was developed by a Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki. In this technique, the seeds are planted very close to each other in order to save space and to get a denser growth of plants. It is one of the most popular ways of aforestation in urban settings.

This initiative was taken by Rise Foundation, management of AFNO Apartments, Sector 7 and Sunit Mohanty Foundation along with the support of Vistara Airlines.

Madhukar Varshney, Joint Secretary of Rise Foundation says, “We did this drive on Miyawaki technique. Such small urban forests are the need of the hour and so we made it.”

According to Madhukar, in about 3000 square feet area, 900 saplings of 25 native species have been planted in the park. Indrajeet Singh, a nature lover and resident of Upkari Apartments, Sector 12 says, “The work of urban forestation was carried out in two phases on two different days. On Saturday, September 10, 2022, the residents and management of AFNO Apartments did their bit and in the second phase, on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Vistara Airlines also joined in to support the cause. This whole initiative is for the environment and to promote greenery.”
