Ranbir Kapoor turns 40! 7 best performances of the actor

The new soon-to-be dad of the Bollywood Ranbir Kapoor turns 40 today. The versatile actor has wowed everyone with his acting skills, from personifying a deaf-mute lover in Barfi to reenacting Sanjay Dutt's life, and a guy destroyed by love in Rockstar. His performances have given us goosebumps on the big screen. Ranbir, who doesn't mind taking chances, comes from a long line of talented actors. In all honesty, the actor has successfully carried on the family legacy throughout his last 15 years in the business.

Let's look at some of the best films that helped build his career on his 40th birthday.

Tamasha

If you want living proof of Ranbir's acting ability, watch an extended version of the song Agar Tum Saath Ho where Ved's marriage proposal has just been rejected by Tara. Ved, conflicted in his heart, is close to breaking as he makes sense of reality. Tamasha which had a slow opening at the box office has emerged as a cult movie. In one of Imtiaz Ali's most inspired works, Ranbir Kapoor has shined as Ved, a restrained man living with a hidden personality. In Imtiaz Ali's own words, RK brought more than what was written in the script.  The love narrative between Ved (Ranbir) and Tara captures our generation's hopes, disappointments, and aspirations (Deepika Padukone).

Barfi!

Credits- The Second Angle

The warmth and joy this movie gives are unexplainable. The unreal love Jhilmil and Barfi shared on-screen bought tears to our eyes. One of the most wholesome and heartwarming films Ranbir has ever been a part of is Barfi, directed by Anurag Basu. Despite accusations of plagiarism, the 2012 movie still holds up well, and that is all because of its stars- Priyanka and Ranbir's portrayal of a deaf-mute man.

Rockstar

Many critics stated that Rockstar, which Ranbir gave one of his most passionate performances to date, is one of his best roles. Ranbir as Jordan was raw, intense and electrifying. The intensity of his love towards Heer was neverending, his anger and love were picturised in the movie convincingly. Moreover, we think that the soundtrack by music legend AR Rahman and Ranbir's firm conviction brought the film to a new level.

Sanju

Following a little break, RK returned in 2018 with a smash 'Sanju' a biographical drama on Sanjay Dutt's controversial life directed by Raju Hirani. Ranbir performed a great job of portraying the troubled star's life in Sanju, for which he won many Best Actor awards. Ranbir's physical makeover and ability to mimic Sanjay Dutt perfectly fit the part.

Wake Up Sid

Credits- MensXP

Wake Up Sid is one of the first films where RK stood out as an actor. In his portrayal of Siddharth Mehra, Ranbir brought out the vulnerabilities and flaws of the character in this coming-of-age drama. Ayan Mukerji's 'Wake up Sid' was indeed a special film and Ranbir Kapoor's acting made it better. It was encouraging to see Ranbir venture beyond Bollywood's 'chocolate boy' label after less encouraging performances in Saawariya and Bachna ae Haseeno.

Rocket Singh

Credits- SBS

It is one of those non-stereotypical portrayals of a young Sardar that never really got its due. Ranbir, apart from his acting skills, is also known for the roles he chooses for himself. At such an early stage of his career, Ranbir chose to play a middle-class Sardar, with nothing good going on for him. Being a loser for almost all his life, he is further ridiculed by his colleagues at the firm he works in. However, one thing he's really good at is being a salesman and that's what he chooses to be to get things right for him.

Jagga Jasoos

Credits- Scroll

With songs, action and drama, this episodic film directed by Anurag Basu was nothing short of a comic book adventure. The film is an underrated gem in Ranbir Kapoor's movies. His performance as Jagga as he jumps and falls through changing scenarios is honest, and the film is a must-watch piece of cinema.
